Tournament Poker Club

A turnout of 104 people gathered on June 11, to play Texas Hold’em at the biannual Leisure World Poker Tournament Club (TPC) event at Hawaiian Gardens Casino.

Nita Lambert won the tournament and Richard Houck and Kurt Bourhenne finished second and third.

Lambert was president of the TPC for four years. She finished third place in the tournament three times before winning this year.

Fourth-through 10th place finishers won prizes. They included Denny Emerson, Harry Sera, Grace Buster, Barbara Van Winkle, Nina DeRosa, Lynne Sadrai and Dinh Vu.

People came early to enjoy breakfast. The tables had professional dealers and an entertaining time was had by all. The club will sponsor another tournament at Hawaiian Gardens on Dec. 10.

Mens Golf

Sixty three golfers teed it up on a pleasant overcast day on June 8 for the monthly Men’s Club tournament at the local course.

Rick Lenger shot a superb four-under-par score of 50 to win low gross honors across the field. Bob Barnum and Fujio Norihiro won closest-to-the pin prizes on holes eight and 17. Ten golfers won circle prizes.

Barnum and Lenger tied for first place in the opening flight with a six under par net 48.

They were followed by Ron Steele, 50; Young Lee, Rick Lingenfelter and Alan Sewell, tied for third at 51; Tom Soonthorn, Bob Turner, Byong Choi and Chang Choi tied for fourth at 52; Fujio Norihiro, 53 and Byron Schweitzer, 54.

Mike Oh won the second flight with a net 47.

Walt Bier was two strokes back, followed by Merle McGee and Steven Ro, tied at 50; Ron Pine, 51; David Song, 52; and E.K. Kim, 53.

Lem Jameson won the third flight with a net 49. He was followed by Rich Miller, 50; Jae H. Lee and Marvin Jones, tied for third at 51; Bob Marselle finished fourth at 52. Kurt Bourhenne and Joe Hammond tied for fifth at 53.

Dennis Kotecki won the fourth flight with a net 50. Walt Toney was a stroke back, followed by Tom Morris, 52; Bill Aarnes and Bill Lesher, tied at 53 and Ed Cisneros, 54.

Tournament Poker Club

Carole Damoci won at the Tournament Poker Club final table with two threes, two kings and an ace on May 4.

Damoci has been a club member for all six years she has lived in Leisure World. She has now won at the final table eight times.

A retired inventory control manager, she serves as President of the Golden Rain Foundation.

Her hobby is card playing.

Ken Goettsch finished second. Third-through-sixth-place finishers were Dolien Nguyen, Grace Buster, Wendy Wu and Sal LaScala.

The first high hand winner was Bette Sargent with three aces and two 10s.

Jody Dixon and Larry Slutsky tied for second high hand honors with three queens and two aces.

Members will meet again on June 18 for the next tournament. Check-in time is 11:30 a.m. and card play begins at noon

Friday Golf

Gary Strivers won the first flight with a low net score of 67 in Friday Golf play on June 10 at the Meadlowlark course.

He was followed by Rick Lenger, 68; Sam Choi, 69; Jim Dickerson, 72; Bill McKusky, 73; and Merle McGee, 74.

Lenger had the irons working, winning both closest-to-the pin contests and picking up three birds.

Stivers, Choi, McKusky, McGee and Bruce Anderson had single birds.

Sandy Boardman nailed down the second flight victory with a low net 61.

Ed Dragan shot a 78 for second, followed by Tom McCullough and Mike Breen, 84.

No birds were made in the second flight.

The next round will be tomorrow, Friday, at the Riverview course.

Monday Golf

Fujio Norihiro shot 70 to win the first flight on June 6 in Monday Golf play. Along the way, he dropped one birdie putt and had the fewest putts, a dazzling 25.

Second with a 71 was Gary Stivers, followed by Rick Lenger,72 with a bird; Jim Dickerson, 75 and closest to the pin on the fourth hole and Merle McGee, 76.

Bob Munn swept the second flight with a 69, a bird, closest to the flag on the 12th hole, and fewest putts, 31.

Marv Ballard was second with a 70, followed by Tom McCullough, 76 and Ed Dragan, 84.

Women’s Golf Club

Leisure World Women’s Golf Club President Susie Kim welcomed 38 members at last week’s meeting.  Tournament chairperson Louise Seifert presented the 2016 club championship award to Sue Choi, whose name will be entered on a plaque in the clubhouse.

Cribbage Club

Alma Zamzow finished first with a score of 839 in weekly Cribbage Club play on June 7 in Clubhouse 3.

She was followed by Kathleen Morrison, 829; Sandra DeDubovay, 827; and Margaret Smith and Alice Buckle, tied for fourth at 826.

Liz Meripol had six games of 121 to receive a consolation prize.

Janet and Rod Carpenter celebrated their birthdays by providing sandwiches.

The club furnished chips and cookies. Pauline Fitzsimons brought cookies. Janet Carpenter and Pat Swope served.

The club meets at noon Tuesdays in Clubhouse 1. To be assured of a table, players should arrive promptly at noon. Partners are not required.
