Travel Germany LW couple attends 50th anniversary reunion

Grace and Samuel Kim, Mutual 8, recently returned from a 12-day vacation in Germany.

They began their trip in Frankfurt, where they attended a ceremony in the city of Essen on May 21 marking the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the large-scale migration of South Korean nurses to Germany.

After the ceremony, they traveled to München, Tübingen and Heidelberg before returning to Frankfurt.

Grace was one of over 10,000 Korean nurses who were recruited by the former West German government between 1959-1976. She worked at the University of Tübingen Hospital from 1970-1973, emigrating to the United States with Samuel a year later.

In addition to sightseeing in the Marienplatz in Munich and at Heidelberg Castle as well as visiting with her nieces, Grace and Samuel spent most of their German vacation exploring the college town of Tübingen and reminiscing of Grace’s days there over 45 years ago.

Samuel and Grace moved to Leisure World in 2012 and would never live anywhere else. But they hope to cherish their fond memories of the German people and culture of the 1970s as well as of today, for many years to come.
