Obituaries Sluder, Judy 1937-2016 Judy Darlene Sluder, 79, Mutual 4 met her Lord on June 1, 2016, following a brief illness.

She is survived by her husband, George Sluder, of 60 years; daughter, Suzanne Sluder-Wiggins, Mississippi; son, Gregory Sluder; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Sluder; and grandsons, Tyler and Nicholas Sluder, Yakima, Washington.

Judy was born in Santa Monica, California, April 1937. George and Judy were married, July 5, 1956, in Los Angeles.

For 18 years Judy accompanied her husband to various U.S. Naval Stations, in the United States and overseas. Upon retirement they moved to Bakersfield, California, in June 1973.

In 1996 they moved to Leisure World, Seal Beach. She enjoyed traveling by any mode of transportation, in the United States or other countries.

She was a 57-year member and a past matron in the Order of the Eastern Star, an avid duplicate bridge player, earning her Life Master status and a professional dress designer/maker.

She was the matriarch and the love of her family’s lives. She will truly be missed.

James Eugene Bapties

1944-2016

James, Eugene Bapties, 71, Mutual 15, passed away on May 25, 2016, at his home in Leisure World, Seal Beach. He was born on July 25,1944, in Chicago Heights, Illinois, to Chester and Vera Bapties. At age 5, James and his family moved to Venice Beach, California. He graduated from Venice High School in 1962.

During the Vietnam War, James served in the U.S. Navy. James worked for Douglas Aircraft, Northrop Aircraft, American Airlines and TSA before retiring.

James married Judy in 1977 in Las Vegas, Nevada. They were married for 38 years. He enjoyed fishing, walking his dogs, bike riding, sports and attending the Lawndale City Council meetings before moving to Leisure World.

James is survived by his wife, Judy; daughters, Jennifer St. Dennis, Nia Bakewell, Nancy Nissen and her son William Nissen; sister, Ruth Westlund; brothers Chester and Robert Bapties; and 11 grandsons.

A memorial service will be held at First Christian Church, Leisure World, at 1 p.m. on June 29. A reception will follow in Clubhouse 3 Room 2.

Wiggins, Joy Adrienne

1932-2016

Joy Adrienne Wiggins, Mutual 12, passed away on May 2, 2016, at her home for the past 33 years. Her husband, Carl, was at her side until the end. They were married for 64 years.

Joy was active in the Golden Age Foundation for many years. She and Carl organized the annual GAF Walk-a-thon, and she was on the ground floor of the GAF Lifeline program.

Joy served on the Mutual 12 Board of Directors as secretary from 1986-1999, and as advisory director in 1992.

Joy’s infectious laughter lit up the room when she walked in.

Barnhill, R. Brooks

1924 – 2016

Robert Brooks Barnhill, resident of Mutual 2 and previous resident of Mutual 7, died quietly in his home on June 6, 2016, due to complications of lymphoma cancer.

Brooks was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. After serving in the U.S. Coast Guard, stationed in Alaska during WWII, he attended Los Angeles City College and graduated from the University of Southern California in 1950.

He worked in several communities in Southern California as a real estate broker and owned his own business, Barnhill Yacht Sales, in San Pedro.

He was an avid sailor and racer, sailing in the TransPac Yacht Race twice. The King Harbor Yacht Club designated a trophy in his name.

He was married to his late wife Joyce for 59 years. He is survived by their only daughter Valerie, son-in-law Stephen, and grandsons Sean Brooks and Robert Parker.

Brooks truly enjoyed living in Leisure World and often said he wished he had moved here sooner as he made many good friends and neighbors through the activities he enjoyed. He served in many positions in the Men’s Golf Club, including president. He was also an active board member of the Pool and Billiards Club. Twice a month he helped deliver emergency meals to residents in his golf cart. He will be fondly remembered by his “French Connection” at the Saturday Night dances.

As he requested there will be no services. Burial will be at sea at a later date.

Sellers, Diane

1945-2016

Diane Sellers, 71, Mutual 8, passed away on May 1, 2016.

Diane was born Feb. 25, 1945, to Clarence and Frona Daniels in Illinois.

She married Bert Sellers in Long Beach on Sept. 27, 1997.

Diane worked as a hair stylist and at a speech and language school.

Her love for the Lord was evidenced by the many lives she touched and impacted. She loved her daily readings of the Bible and was open and encouraging to everyone she came in contact with. Her love of “hurting” people allowed her the opportunity to lead many people to Christ’s salvation. She was a member of the Rock Church in Seal Beach and was active in several Bible studies and women’s groups.

She is survived by her loving husband of 19 years, Bert Sellers; seven children, sons, Mark, Mickey and Bill Lohr, Mark, Steve and Scott Sellers, and daughter Angelina Sharp; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services were conducted by Pastor Mickey Lohr. She was cremated and her ashes were scattered at sea.

She was loved by all.
