Community Sing

Monday sing-along is reorganizing

The Community Sing, notable as one of the oldest clubs in Leisure World, will hold a reorganization meeting in Clubhouse 1 at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, June 27. Longtime leaders Felicia and Lewis Ward recently retired after 11 years of excellent service. Their departure has left openings for a coordinator and an emcee.

Several Community Sing participants are willing to share the responsibilities, but in order to continue, the club is required to have the same structure as other LW clubs, including having elected officers.

The Community Sing is the only club in LW where amateurs have an opportunity to sing with piano accompaniment; the audience can sing along with a leader;  and everyone can listen to LW artists. The club has been supported by a loyal group of singers for many years. It has large print song books with familiar, beloved melodies.

The format could be changed, depending on the interest of the club members. Guest  appearances could be longer. Amateurs could play instruments or bring other talents.

If the club can meet requirements, the Community Sing will re-start on Monday, Sept. 12, one week after Labor Day.

All who are interested in continuing the Monday night sing-along program are invited to attend and give led support, and provide opinions and/or suggestions.

To volunteer or for more information, call Ellen Brannigan at 594-9606, Ethel Carter at 493-3054, or Carmen Edwards at 431-4257.

Leslie has an extensive background in art and is adept at working in any media. She studied at the Otis Art Institute, Long Beach City College and with several well-known Laguna Beach artists. During the 1970s, she and her husband owned and operated The Brush ‘N Palette, a frame shop and art studio in Bellflower where she painted and taught art.

During that time she won many awards in shows throughout Southern California. She also was art director for the Lakewood Artist Guild from 1973-1978. From 1980-1990 she lived in Carson City, Nevada, where she conducted workshops and classes for children and adults and particularly enjoyed mentoring high school students. Before moving to Leisure World she was an instructor on the board of directors of St. Mary’s Art Center in Northern Nevada.

Leslie is affiliated with the prestigious American Artists of Renown and the International Society of Artists Organizations, as well as the Huntington Beach Art League, in addition to the Leisure World Art League.

She has been juried into, and invited to exhibit in, several art shows. Her art can be found in private and corporate collections in the U.S., Venezuela, Mexico and Canada.
