LW Drones

New service club is forming; will use drones to assist EOC

The future is here—Google has self driving cars on the road; Amazon is experimenting with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV’s) to deliver packages; and smartphones equipped with GPS receivers provide door-to-door driving instructions anywhere on earth.

Technology has evolved to a point where the capabilities and costs of UAV’s, commonly called drones, are within reach of hobbyists. As the number of users grows and the technology evolves, more practical uses for drones are discovered, including search and rescue, aerial damage assessment and shark patrols by the Seal Beach lifeguards.

Leisure Worlder Don Marshall is forming a Leisure World Drones Service Club to foster safe, ethical and responsible operation of recreational drones. The club will recruit, train and establish a pool of volunteer first responder drone operators who could be deployed to assist the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in performing damage assessment by using camera equipped drones. The club will facilitate members keeping abreast of the rapidly evolving drone technology and exploring opportunities for non-emergency uses, such as roof inspections, that could benefit the community.

A organizational meeting is planned in the near future. All LWers interested in taking an active part in the formation of this new service club are invited to to contact Marshall at lwdrones@yahoo.com or call, 598-4950 for more information including time, date and place of the organizational meeting.
