San Gorgonio

LWer makes trek up tallest peak in So. California

On May 21, Lance Ferm, Mutual 1, climbed Mt. San Gorgonio, the tallest peak in Southern California. Mt. San Gorgonio is located on the north side of Monongo Indian Casino on the way to Palm Springs off Interstate 10.

Ferm and his hiking friend Ed Swan took the Vivian Creek trail from Forest Home off Highway 38. The trail was 8.4 miles up and took 11 hours to complete. The trail was mostly unmaintained. Several detours were taken to avoid fallen trees and unmelted snow.

It was windy and 25 degrees at the summit, so they only spent 10 minutes taking in the views. Along the way they saw scenic a mountain meadow, spring flowers blooming and a waterfall.
