Democratic Club

Laura Wilson lauded as ‘Democrat of Year’

The 2016 Leisure World Democrat of the Year Award will be presented to Laura Wilson during the Democratic Club’s annual dinner on Saturday, July 9, in Clubhouse 4 at 6 p.m.

In recognizing Wilson as an outstanding volunteer on behalf of the club, the board of directors expressed its appreciation for her endless enthusiasm as well as all she has accomplished in the past year.

A relatively new member of the board, Wilson heads up the club’s outreach and public relations programming.

As part of this effort, she designed the club’s first website www.sblwdems.wordpress.com, written press releases, published flyers for events, created a Facebook page and developed a secure way for club members to donate electronically.

Additionally, in an effort to reach out to more Democrats, she is working with a team of volunteers to develop and test a variety of strategies for contacting other Leisure World residents who might need voting information or other assistance.

Wilson enjoys living in Leisure World. She has found the Democratic Club to be a great way to contribute, and a friendly place to get to know others with similar views.

When she isn’t busy with her family or club activities, she enjoys taking walks around the golf course with her dog Freckles and swimming in the Leisure World pool.

Club members and friends are reminded that Sue Savary, candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives, running to replace the 48th district incumbent Dana Rohrabacher, will be the featured speaker at the dinner.

Michelle Akeley, a Southern California based musical theater performer and educator, will follow Dr. Savary’s presentation. Leisure World pianist Barbara McIlhaney will be play music during dinner.

Tickets cost $25 and may be paid for at the door, but reservations must be made in advance by calling Laura Wilson at 760-6660.

The Democratic Club voter registration table will be closed in July and August and will return in September. For more information, call Dale Lieberfarb at 594-1119.
