Table Tennis Club

Shin Chee Chung and Susan Dodson finished in first place and Gregory Black and Linda Joo tied for second in the Table Tennis Club’s first mixed player marathon.

A field of 35 players competed for nearly two hours, playing almost 100 individual 11-point games on four tables.

The top winners won gift cards to In-‘N-Out Burger. Others won participation prizes.

An in-house tournament will begin at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 3. Sign-ups are still being taken.

It will be singles and doubles play in five divisions.

Friday Golf

Bill McKusky and Bruce Anderson tied for first place with net scores of 70 in Friday Group play on July 22 the Willowick course.

McKusky also had two closest-to-the pin victories and two birds. The co-winners were followed by Dave Lacascia, 73; Merle McGee, 73 and Jim Dickerson.

Newcomer Bill Zurn won the second flight with net 70, followed by Lowell Goltra and Mauricio Rivero,

Since no birds were made in the second flight, a playoff is scheduled Friday at Baker.

Monday Golf

Bruce Anderson, a relative newcomer to Monday Golf, ran roughshod over the first flight in play on July 18 at Willowick.

He shot an impressive 63, winning by an incredible nine strokes. Rick Lenger followed in second place with a 72, two birdies, a tie with Fujio Norihiro for closest-to-the pin on the seventh hole and lowest putts in the flight with 27.

Bill McKusky was third with 75 and two birds. Paul Cose followed with a 76 and Merle McGee carded a 79 and was closest to the flag on the 16th hole.

Jim Dickerson also had a birdie.

Guys, Gals Golf

Forty couples survived a warm, humid day at the local course on July 20 to play in the monthly Guys and Gals tournament.  

Highlight of the day was a hole-in-one by Jae H. Lee on the eighth hole. He shared closest-to-the pin honors on the same hole with Mary Ann Moore.  

Jay Kim and Susie Kim won closest-to-the pin prizes on 17.

Young and Hae Lee won the A flight with an impressive 14-under par net score of 40.  

Rick Lenger and Gee Gee Kwak finished second at 45, followed by Jay and Myung Kim, Alan Sewell and Mary Ann Moore and Chang and Soo Choi, all tied at 47.

Merle McGee and Yasmin Merali won the B flight with a net 41. They were followed by Steven and Judy Roe and Jae and Sun Lee, tied at 44; and Paul Alloway and Ann Tran and Stan Shiroma and Helen Yoon, tied at 45.

Jim Dickerson and Laura Garcia won the C flight with a superb 12-under-par net score of 42.

Lem Jameson and Sandy Derouin were a stroke back, followed by Ned and Donna Sprow and Dennis Kotecki and Evelyn Scherber, 45; Youn and Melinda Lee and Tom Morris and Marilyn Hewitt, tied at 46 and Joe DiDonato and Sandra deDubovay, 48 and Don and Sandy Kim and Bill McKusky and Donna Cooper 49.  

Shuffleboard Club

Teams are now forming that will compete in Shuffleboard Club league play on Sept. 9. To join, call Liz Meripol at 537-0318.

Practices are held at 2 p.m. on Mondays and 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the courts behind Clubhouse 1.

Mimal training is required to play in the league.

The next membership meeting will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 2.

A social hour with coffee, tea and doughnuts is planned from 9:30-10 a.m., followed by the meeting.

The last Friday of the month luncheon is planned at 11:30 a.m. on July 29 at Ruby’s Restaurant in Long Beach.

Table Tennis

Patty Wasserman of Mutual 7 came up with an amazing performance in the recent National Table Tennis Championship tournament at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Patty, formerly known as Patty-Martinez-Simons, took home a record-breaking nine medals accumulated in every match she played.

She won five gold medals, one silver and bronze.

Her gold medal wins came in over 40 singles hardbat, women’s open hardbat, open doubles with partner Dan Seemiller, women’s over 50 doubles with partner Charlene Liu and over 60 doubles.

Wasserman and Seemiller have not lost a doubles game playing together in the last three year.

Wasserman also won a silver for a second finish and a bronze for a third-place finish.

Cribbage Club

Fifty-four members of the Cribbage Club were in attendance on July 19 when Sandra Holt finished first with a score of 841. She was followed by Karl Henry, 838; Anita Smart, 837; and Patti Smith, 830.

Bea Lissow had no wins and won a consolation prize.

Bob and Helyn Edwards celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary by treating members to cake and orange swirl ice cream. Edwards and Margaret Smith served.

In play on July 12, 67 players turned out, a larger turnout than usual.

Kathleen Morrison had the high score of 842 followed by John Loasby, 841; Margaret Smith, 837 and Ethel Freitas, 834.

Anita Smart had six games of 121 and won a consolation prize.

Members celebrated Joyce Underhill’s 90th birthday. Her two daughters prepared sandwiches, fruit, chips, cookies, ice cream and candy for members.

The club meets at noon Tuesdays in Clubhouse 1. To be assured of a table, players should arrive promptly at noon. Partners are not required.

Players usually finish by 3:30 p.m.

Bowling Club

The Leisure World Bowling Club is looking for new bowlers for the upcoming season. 

Three-person co-ed teams require players with a handicap is 90 percent of 200, so it isn’t necessary to be high average bowler to have fun and compete.

The new season begins on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at Westminster Lanes. Practice begins at noon and bowling begins at 12:30 p.m.

Tournament Poker Club

Dolien Nguyen won at the final table with a pair of nines in the Tournament Poker Club’s player seminar on July 16 in Clubhouse 6.

Jay Young was second, followed by Susan Dodson, Larry Slutsky, Jane Legus, Bill Clawson and Grace Buster.

Nguyen is a retired teacher and has lived in Mutual 9 for 15 years.  She enjoys yoga and ping pong and has been a Tournament Poker Club member since its inception.

First high hand winner was Chuck Burnett with four kings and a jack. No.2 was Del Baker with four threes and a 10.

Tournament play resumes on Aug. 8 in Clubhouse 6. Check in time is 11:30 a.m.,followed by cards play at noon.

The club will host its first summer fun cookout at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, at the Clubhouse 1 barbeque area. The cost is $3 per person.

The club will provided hot dogs, hamburgers, and drinks. Members are requested to bring a side dish to share.

Games of volleyball and bocce ball will be played for prizes.
