Men’s Golf Club Sixty three golfers teed it up on a warm day on July 13 to play in the monthly Men’s Club tournament at the local course. Rick Lenger shot a two-under-par score of 52 to win low gross honors across the field.

Joon Yoon and Young Lee won closest to the pin prizes on holes 8 and 17. Eleven golfers won circle prizes.

Rick Lingenfelter won the first flight with a four-under-par net score of 50, a stroke ahead of Alan Sewell.

They were followed by Young Lee and Rick Lenger, tied at 52; Walt Bier, 53 and Won Song and Merle McGee, tied at 54.

Paul Alloway won the second flight with a net 49. He was followed by Bill McKusky, 50; Byron Schweitzer, 54 and Dave LaCascia, Rick Miller and Hyon Shin, tied at 55.

Manny Miranda and Joon Yoon tied for first place in the third flight with a 49.

Lem Jameson and John Coultrup tied for second at 52, and Ron Jackson and Dale Williamson tied for third at 53.

Pickleball

Nick Arico, ambassador of Torrance, USA Pickleball Association, will give players from Leisure World pointers on how to play pickleball, from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, July 24 at Clubhouse 1. He will help players learn various strategies and techniques

Arico will return for a workshop from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 7.

Pickleball, one of the fastest-growing sports in North America, is played from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. every Sunday in Clubhouse 1.The game is played on a badminton size court, with a net at tennis height.

Oversized table tennis paddles are used along with a perforated plastic ball similar to a wiffle ball. 

The first player or team to reach 11 points wins the game. A player can only score points on his or her serve.

Both players on a team serve; once each faults, the serve goes to the other team.  

The game is easy to learn. Residents who have played tennis, badminton or table tennis are naturals.

Pickleball is a low impact sport that is easier on the elbow and shoulder then tennis.

Players of various levels can play together.

Friday Golf

Fujio Norihiro and Merle McGee tied for first place with 64s in Friday Golf play on July 15 at the Riverview course.

Sam Choi and Bill McKusky tied for third, a stroke off the winning pace. Bob Todd shot an age-beating 86 with a net score of 67 for fifth.

Paul Cose tested his new hip on the tough hills of Riverview, winding up sixth and adding a closest-to-the pin victory on the ninth hole.

Rick Lenger and Jim Dickerson carded 69s to tie for seventh place.

McGee was the other closest-to-the pin winner on No. 2.

Rick Lenger had six birds, Sam Choi, two and McKusky, McGee and Cose, one apiece.

Mauricio Rivero won the second flight with the low score of the day, a 63. He was followed by Lowell Goltra, 64 and two birds; Dave Lacascia, 66 and Bruce Anderson.

The next round is at Willowick.

Shuffleboard Club

Teams are now forming to compete in Shuffleboard Club league play on Sept. 9. To join, call Liz Meripol at 537-0318.

Practices are held at 2 p.m. on Mondays and 10 a.m. on Wednesdays at the courts behind Clubhouse 1.

Minimal training is required to play in the league.

Monday Golf

Merle McGee and Ron Jackson tied for first place with matching scores of 54 in Monday Golf play on July 11 at the Baker course.Sam Choi was third with a net 60, followed by Bruce Anderson, Fujio Norihiro and Gary Stivers, tied for fourth at 61.

Rick Lenger collected two birdies and so did McGee. Single birdies in the flight were made by Jackson, Stivers and Jim Dickerson.

Norihiro was closest to the pin on the third hole. Lenger was closest to the pin on No. 15 and he had the fewest putts, 29.

Lowell was the only player in the second flight, so he was an easy winner with a 63 and fewest putts, 35.

Golfers are invited to test the outside courses and join the Monday or Friday groups, or both.

Poker Club

Winners were crowned at three tables in Tournament Poker Club’s players seminar on July 9 at Clubhouse 6.

The club will host its first summer cookout at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, at the Clubhouse 1 barbecue area. The cost is $3 per person.

The club will provide hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks. Members are requested to bring a side dish to share.

Games of volleyball and bocce ball will be played for prizes.

Best Time Bunco

Some LW clubs “go dark” in the summer because members are vacationing or pursuing other activities that compete for their time.

But not Best Time Bunco. The popular bunco group continues to meet on the second and fourth Monday of every month.

Members enjoy a social hour at halftime with socializing and refreshments provided by the club.

New members are welcome. Bunco is a dice game that is easy to learn. Play begins at 6 p.m. in Clubhouse 3, Room 1.

An early arrival is suggested for socializing before the games begin.
