Scrabble Club

Scoring soared in June for members of the Leisure World Scrabble Club.

Players usually hit the high 200s and low 300s, all good scores.

But Zoe Pickell, Larry Edgar, Wanda Beman, Mark Scott, Sylvia Makus and Flo Thompson scored between 350 and 399.

Amazingly, Pickell did it three times in the same afternoon.

High scorer for the month was Flo Thompson with 433 points.

Players register a bingo when they are able to play all seven their tiles in a single turn.

Pickell did so with “fondues,” Beman with “footings,” Scott with “aspires” and “ jalousie,” a type of window; Thompson with “slowing” and “gristle,” Nesland with “saltier,” and Maria Giegerich with “leagues.”

The club meets Wednesdays in Clubhouse 3, Room 5. Residents are welcome.

Three sessions of one-on-one play starts at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. An early arrival is advised to get familiar with the club’s style of play and review the rules.

For more information, call Flo Nesland at 598-1384.

The Leisure World Seal Beach Table Tennis Club hosted cross-town rival Laguna Woods Village on June 25 in Clubhouse 6.

The visiting team won, 38-22, but the hosts, grouped in five divisions had many personal and team achievements.

In Division 1, LWSB’s Chang Ho Choi won both his singles games, and so did Jae Kim in Division 2. Divisions 3 and 4 players tied Laguna Woods in doubles, with Linda Joo and Susan Dodson winning both sets in Division 4. In Division 5, TV Tran won both singles sets and the team tied in doubles.

Twenty players from each club played and more than 100 guests were served lunch by Kate Kim and Joy Park.

Thanks to hosts Carl Bourhenne, Hanna Rubinstein, Joseph and Elaine Won, and division leaders Wendy Wu, Steve Harris, Randy Miller, Susan Dodson and TV Tran.

LWSB Club President and Tournament Chair K.C. Park thanked Laguna Woods President Raymond Landis for help in organizing the successful event.
