Cuba

LWer visits birthplace of her grandma

Amy Walker, Mutual 2, and her family recently returned from a 10-day trip to Havana, Cuba.

President Obama restored full diplomatic relations with Cuba this year and opened an embassy in Havana for the first time in more than a half-century making travel to Cuba less difficult. However, visas from the Cuban government are still required.

“The Atlantic ocean is warm and beautiful, and the Cubans are friendly,” said Walker.

She says the tropical fruits, mangoes, papayas, pineapples and bananas are delicious and inexpensive. “Cuban food is very good, a lot of fresh fish, white rice, black beans and other goodies,” she says.

They visited the Historical Museum of Castro and Che Guevara’s revolution and found it very interesting, with pictures, historical mementos, books and films.

They also visited the House of Culture for Seniors, where seniors can go several days of the week for lectures about different topics and “danzon” classes. (Sort of like a folk dance for couples.)

They also visited Ernest Hemingway’s house and a couple of bars he used to go to every evening. In one bar, there is a life size, bronze statue of him.

Then they went to Manzanillo, about three hours from Havana, where her grandma was born.

It’s a quaint small village by the Atlantic ocean, with beautiful beaches for swimming.

An American embassy is in the planning stages in Manzanillo. It will be about 15 stories tall in front of the bay.
