PAGE 1 JULY 28 2016 FRESHMAN FEVER A Bridge between the Mel-Tones and Beach Boys

The Four Freshmen—one of the top vocal groups of the 1950s that bridged 1940s ensembles like Mel-Tones with harmony-based rock ’n’ roll bands like Beach Boys—will be featured on the Amphitheater stage tonight, July 28, at 8 p.m.

The show is sponsored in part by Superwire.

In 1948, four young men created a sound that changed the way vocal jazz harmony was heard and performed.

Known as The Four Freshmen, the group started with two brothers, Don and Ross Barbour, their cousin Bob Flanigan and friend Hal Kratzsch.

With a soaring true tenor in Bob Flanigan, the group began a sound that has endured for over six decades.

The Four Freshmen were an important influence on Brian Wilson, beginning in the mid-50s, according to Wikipedia. He listened to one of their albums, “The Four Freshmen and the Five Trombones,” and it “mesmerized” him. As a teenager, Wilson traveled alone to Catalina Island to see the Four Freshmen.

The band is also credited with influencing The Lettermen, The Four Preps and The Manhattan Transfer, among others.

The show is part of the 2016 Leisure World Amphitheater season now underway with free entertainment every Thursday night until Sept. 8. Shows start at 8 p.m. until September when they will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Residents are welcome to come early to buy dinner from Koffel’s food truck or ice cream from Cold Stone Creamery. Or bring a picnic for pre-show dining.

The Minibus has extended service on Thursdays before and after the show.

Monkey life is subject of Disney film Saturday

Movies at the Amphitheater continue this Saturday, July 30, at 8:15 p.m. with the showing of “Money Kingdom,” rated PG-13.

“Monkey Kingdom,” a 2015 American nature documentary film, was directed by Mark Linfield and Alastair Fothergill and narrated by Tina Fey.

The documentary is about a family of monkeys living in ancient ruins founded in the jungles of Polonnaruwa in Sri Lanka. The film was released by Disneynature.

In South Asia, Maya the monkey and her son Kip struggle to survive within the competitive social hierarchy of the troop at Castle Rock.

When neighboring monkeys take over their home, Maya’s whole troop is forced to relocate.

She uses ingenuity to lead the members of her extended family to untapped resources amid strange new creatures and unfamiliar surroundings.

Ultimately, the entire troop must work together to reclaim Castle Rock, where Maya hopes her son will have a bright future.

The movie is partially sponsored by West Coast Clinical Trials.

The Golden Age Foundation (GAF) will conduct a raffle to benefit the group’s Leisure World programs, so bring a few dollars and stop by its table for tickets.

The GAF oversees the annual tax assistance program that helped more than 700 residents last year, runs the Clubhouse 6 Hospitality Center program and provides the loan of mobility aids among other programs.

Bring school supplies for military families tonight

A school supply drive for the children of local military families will be held. People can drop off donations of pens, crayons, pencils, backpacks, notebooks, paper, etc., at collection points at Amphitheater entrances.

Donations will be distributed at the Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base, the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station, the VA Medical Center in Long Beach and needy students at Garden Grove-area schools.

Satellite Security Office to open

The GRF Security Department will open a new satellite office on Monday, Aug. 1, on the ground floor of Clubhouse 5. It will be open seven days a week from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

The new location will provide a greater level of safety and convenience as it is located at the center of the community. All resident vehicle decal processing will be handled at the satellite office instead of the Main Gate. Bicycles and golf cart decals will also be processed there.

For resident vehicle decal transactions, residents must bring a copy of their Golden Rain Foundation identification cards, a copy of a current driver’s license, current vehicle registration showing the resident as the legal vehicle owner, and proof of current vehicle insurance. To register a motorcycle, the driver’s license should reflect a motorcycle endorsement.

Some common issues that impact the issuance or renewal of decals include:

• The vehicle is not registered in the shareholder’s name.

• The vehicle is registered to a spouse who is not present.

• The driver’s license is expired.

• No current vehicle registration.

The Security Department is in the process of updating vehicle decals in the community. The new versions include the shareholder’s corresponding mutual on the decal.

When people renew decals, Security staff will remove the old blue “R” decal and replace it with the new version.

It will help Mutuals enforce carport/parking policies on their property to ensure their shareholders have sufficient space to park.

The Main Gate facility will no longer issue resident vehicle decals. All new decals and renewals will be issued at the satellite office in Clubhouse 5.

Ticket sales will start Monday, Sept. 12, in the Hospitality Center of Clubhouse 6.

People will be able to buy tickets, $25, from 10-11 a.m. on weekdays at the center.

Project will get underway in 2017

The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA), in cooperation with Caltrans, is widening 16 miles of I-405 between SR-73 in Costa Mesa and I-605 near the Los Angeles County line.

The project includes adding one regular lane in each direction from Euclid Street to I-605 and making improvements to freeway entrances, exits and bridges.

It also will construct the 405 Express Lanes, two lanes in each direction from SR-73 to I-605. The new express lanes – incorporating the existing carpool lanes and connectors that opened in 2014 – will give solo drivers the choice to speed up their commute for a toll, and carpoolers will ride free or at a discounted rate pending the results of the project traffic and revenue study.

Construction is scheduled to begin in late 2017 and end in early 2023.

Visit the project website at www.octa.net/405improvement and click on the “Stay Informed” tab on the right to sign-up to receive email alerts with closure and detour information.

USA Olympic Team flag files over JFTB in Los Al

The U.S. Olympic Women’s Water Polo Team closes out practice at the Joint Forces Training Base (JFTB) Aquatic Training Center this week as it prepares to represent the United States in the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Ranked No. 1 in the world, The U.S. team will be defending the gold medal it won at the London Olympic Games four years ago.

The team has won every major tournament since 2014, including capturing the gold medal at the FINA World League Super Final last month in Shanghai, China.

“JFTB is honored to serve as the official training site for the U.S. Olympic Women’s Water Polo Team and we look forward to cheering our ‘home team’ on to victory in Rio,” said JFTB Installation Cmdr. Brig. Gen. Nate Reddicks. “On behalf of every citizen soldier based at Los Al, we wish Head Coach Adam Krikorian, Team Captain Maggie Steffens and all her great teammates the best of luck as they go for the gold in Brazil.”

Blood drive is set for July 29 at HCC

The American Red Cross will sponsor a blood drive at the Leisure World Health Care Center from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., tomorrow, July 29.

The Red Cross has less than a five-day blood supply on hand and is making a national appeal for blood donations. Shortages are often caused when blood and platelets are distributed to hospitals faster than donations are coming in, according to a statement.

People of all blood types are urged to donate blood or platelets through Aug. 31.

To make an appointment or for more information, call Marie Puffpaff, HCC registered nurse and geriatric nurse practitioner, at 795-6281.
