Watch Your Step

Catherine Colquhoun was called last week by an aggressive man representing pace.com who was anxious to come to her Mutual 2 residence to replace her air conditioning unit.

Because it was more 50 years old, he said it should be replaced immediately for no charge -- the cost would come out of her taxes.

“He said he could be here at 11 a.m. the day after he called,”she said.

When Colquhoun said she would not be at home, he said he would come the following day. She refused the offer then alertly contacted security to make sure the man was not allowed into the community.

There is no record of a company by that name.

A woman from Mutual 5 was surprised to get a recorded phone message from a man in Cambodia who said he was following up on the weight-loss information she requested.

“I don’t know what he was up to, but that could never have been me ... I’m very thin.”

So is her patience, along with hundreds of other residents who get such calls on a daily basis.

•••

A “misrepresentative” of Bank of America’s online security service sent an email warning to a resident that her account had been temporarily suspended due to “multiple log-on attempts.”

Failing to “update” her account on an attached link in the message would lead to a restriction of her online banking privileges.

The LWer, as it turns out, does not bank with that institution.

A resident called last week for the local contact numbers of the FBI to report a crime.

In Los Angeles, call (310) 477-6565. The email address is losangeles.fbi.gov. The agency does not have an office in Orange County.

Senior Patriots for Peace

Mike Wisniewski of the Los Angeles Catholic Worker will be the guest speaker when the Senior Patriots For Peace meet at 1 p.m. on Aug. 12 in Clubhouse 4. His presentation is titled “Nuclear Weapons Are Immoral and Illegal.” All are invited to attend the free event.

Wisniewski is a photojournalist and 25-year member of the Los Angeles Catholic (LACW) worker community serving the poor and homeless of Skid Row. He is also editor and columnist for the Catholic Agitator, the LACW newspaper and webmaster for its website.

In remembrance of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki 71 years ago this month, Wisniewski will discuss why nuclear weapons should be universally banned and his longtime passionate activism in pursuit of that goal. A discussion period will follow.

Continuing last month’s new ecology feature “Getting Rid of Plastic,” Rachael Lehmburg will enlighten the attendees about the harm plastic wreaks on the environment. She will also discuss how it hides in everyday products and how to find earth-friendly alternatives.

Senior Patriots for Peace is dedicated to the promotion of peace and focus on issues of world peace, social justice and the environment to nurture a world where people can live healthy and peaceful lives for generations to come.

For further information and for non-residents who want to attend, call Nancy Goldstein at 896-8604 or Lucille Martin at 430-1047.

The Leisure World Investment Forum will meet at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 9, in Clubhouse 3, Room 6.

Speaker Larry T. Pino, financial advisor with LPL Financial, will take a close look at the summer of 2016 that’s shaping up to be a season of political and market resilience.

Both equity and fixed income markets have posted strong return for the year.  However, the sources of these returns are very different and may not be sustained in the long run.

Pino will review the second quarter’s earnings season, which could represent a turning point for corporate profits. He will also discuss the Federal Reserve’s position on interest rates, following the July 31 meeting.

Both could have a direct bearing on financial markets for the remainder of 2016 and beyond.

For over 26 years, the Forum has been committed to informing and educating LW residents by presenting monthly discussions on key financial topics and current economic events.

Presentations are sponsored by Basdakis Wealth Management Group, an independent office of LPL Financial.
