Olympics opener to be shown at Amphitheater

The Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, are from Aug. 5-21.

The Rio 2016 opening ceremony will be broadcast from the Maracanã Stadium on Aug. 5.

Leisure World residents are invited to enjoy the kick off festivities at the Amphitheater. The ceremony will be shown on the giant screen at 8 p.m. tomorrow.

Team USA will march in preppy style fit for the tropics. Athletes will be decked in Ralph Lauren sportswear, from white denim jeans tapered at the ankle and patriotic t-shirts, Polo Pony-emblazoned navy blazers and red, white and blue striped boat shoes.

The games will also be broadcast daily in the lobby of Clubhouse 1.

Closed captioning will be displayed when the volume is muted due to events taking place in the main clubhouse area.

Experience ‘Rocky Mountain High’ tonight

Rick Schuler’s Tribute to John Denver, the Rocky Mountain High Experience, will be featured on the Amphitheater stage tonight, Aug. 4, at 8 p.m.

The show is sponsored in part by Charles Briskey On-Site Sales.

Singer-songwriter Rick Schuler looks like John Denver and sounds like him too. After Denver’s untimely death in 1997, his music demanded a voice, which Schuler perfectly captures as he performs classics such as “Rocky Mountain High” and “Country Roads.”

Louisiana-born and Missouri-raised, Schuler was 13 when comparisons to Denver began. The first look-sound-play-alike piece of many that he eventually mastered was Denver’s revered “Sunshine on My Shoulders.”

At 18, Schuler was featured on a TV show “Incredible Kids & Co” on CBS (KMOX), which ultimately aired on numerous network affiliates across the country. After a featured radio performance on The Jack Carney Show starring as “the John Denver guy,” Schuler eventually moved to California to pursue his own Americana songwriting career while continuing to perform Denver’s music at venues across America.

This show is part of the 2016 Leisure World Amphitheater season now underway with free entertainment every Thursday night until Sept. 8. Shows start at 8 p.m. until September when they will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Residents are welcome to come early to buy dinner from Koffel’s food truck or ice cream from Cold Stone Creamery. Or bring a picnic for pre-show dining.

The Minibus has extended service on Thursdays before and after the show.

Pier is open on weekends

The Seal Beach Pier will be entirely closed during heavy demolition and construction work that began July 5 after a fire destroyed the former Ruby’s restaurant at the end of the structure May 20.

The fire caused $5 million in damage. About 8,000 square feet of damaged pier is being replaced in a job that could take up to a year.

The pier is open evenings and weekends.

During the week, it is closed between 6 a.m.-5 p.m.

Prevent ID theft by shredding personal papers

Document shredding will be held from 10 a.m.-noon on Thursday, Aug. 25, in the Clubhouse 2 parking lot.

This is a free service for residents sponsored by the Golden Age Foundation.

At 11:30 the line will be closed, and all shredding will end promptly at noon, so people are advised to come early.

Decal processing unit is located at Building 5

The GRF Security Department opened a new satellite office on Monday on the ground floor of Clubhouse 5.

It is open seven days a week from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

All new decals and renewals will be issued at the satellite office in Clubhouse 5.

Bicycles and golf cart decals will also be processed there.

Decals will not be issued in wet weather.

The Main Gate Security Office will no longer issue resident vehicle decals.

In addition to decal distribution, the office of Security Chief Jaime Guerrero is located in Building 5.

The GRF Distribution and the GRF Recreation departments will also be moved to this central location.

For resident vehicle decal transactions, people must bring a copy of their Golden Rain Foundation identification cards, a copy of a current driver’s license, current vehicle registration showing

the resident as the legal vehicle owner and proof of current vehicle insurance.

The Security Department is in the process of updating vehicle decals in the community.

The new versions include shareholders mutual numbers on decals.

When people renew decals, Security staff will remove the out-dated blue “R” decal and replace it with the newer version.

These decals help Mutuals enforce carport/parking policies on their property to ensure that shareholders have sufficient space to park.

For more information, call 431-6586, ext. 377, or stop by the new office on weekdays.

Handicap upgrades are still available

Leisure World residents who have trouble stepping into the shower could be eligible for a free bathroom upgrade.

The bathroom improvement process is coordinated by CivicStone, a company hired by the City of Seal Beach to review all applications and manage the construction improvements with approved contractors. Once residents are approved for the program and scheduled for work, the job usually takes less than a week to complete.

Applications are available online at the City of Seal Beach’s main website at www.sealbeachca.gov.

The project converts the tub/shower combination into a shower only.

To qualify, applicants must be over 55 years of age and have a gross household income less than or equal to the Orange County maximums as follows: One person, $54,600; two people, $62,400; and three people, $70,200.

A Doctor’s Analysis Form is also required.
